The Latin Grammys

Eddie Lewis subbed for Roy Chapa in a performance by Houston's most popular salsa band in the Latin Grammys. It's always a special treat to play with this band because they are the most professional salsa band Eddie has ever worked with. The charts are clearly written, the band is punctual and the pay is reliable. This band is a cut above the rest.

Eddie was a gust soloist for the 10:45 service at Mt. Olive this Sunday. He teamed up with Carol Olborn (organ/piano) to perform works by Bach, Handel and Stanley. This was a prelude to the trumpet and organ concert schedule in the spring (more details to come).

Our second Living Rhythms performance in a week, this time the band featured Eddie Lewis, Woody Witt on Tenor, Ted Wenglinski on Piano, Glen Ackerman on Bass and Tim Solook on drums. The evening was something of a celebration of Eddie Lewis' twentieth year as a professional trumpet player in Houston, Texas. Mr. Lewis moved to Houston in 1988 and has been active as a professional musician from the very beginning.

The Grooves

Website Update:
AnExpressionOfGrace.org
9/24/2008
The original plan was to keep this site separate from Eddie's other sites, but now that it has been up for a while, we realize it needs to be part of our public circle of web resources. The update referred to above is that Eddie created a new format for it. It is now what they call a "Standards-Based" website. He made this switch out of necessity but that's a long story for another time.

Eddie Lewis had a performance with the OJays at the Texas 2008 Music Festival. The grounds were packed on Sunday night as you can see in the picture below. Unfortunately, the performance with La Orquesta Salmarum was canceled the next day. The excuse given was bad weather, but I don't really buy that.

We have adjusted to our new software and the new features and it looks like the Consort Immanuel website is fully functional again. Thanks for your patience.

Fonts
8/18/2008
We're still working on the site. For some reason, the style sheet has been left off with many of the pages. We are working on the problem but it may not be fixed until next week when we have more time to devote towards this issue.

Website Maintenance
8/15/2008
We've been updating our software and moving to new laptops (so we can be more mobile and still get our work done) so we haven't had much time to post news lately. We are up and running again so the time sensitive pages (such as lesson availability) are now current and the news on this page will begin flowing once again.

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Dedi and Gary Wood
8/15/2008
They had a beautiful wedding on August 8th. Mr. Lewis provided a trumpet and bass duo for their outdoor weeding, performing traditional wedding music and various classical works by Teleman, Handel, Bach and others.

Summer Jazz Camp

7/22/2008
Eddie Lewis and Consort Immanuel were busy last week with one of their Summer Music Camps. The Jazz Improvisation Camp was different from most jazz camps in that the emphasis was on improvisation and not on jazz ensemble playing.

Mr. Lewis performed several works by Handle during the prelude, the Clarke Trumpet Voluntary for the bride's processional, the Eucharist and Purcell's Trumpet Tune for the recessional.

TMFJP

6/11/2008
The annual performance of the Texas Music Festival Jazz Project went well this year. Eddie Lewis has been performing with this band for five years now and it's always one of the highlights of the year. If you weren't able to make it, plan ahead for next year because this is the best of the best that Houston has to offer.

Shout

6/9/2008
The dance floor was packed on Saturday night at a wedding - in a tent - in the yard of one of the River Oaks mansions - as the David Caceres band played Shout. This was one of the most enthusiastic dancing crowds they've had in years. The picture above was taken after the bride and groom had already left and the band was heading into an hour of over time.

Recording Session:
Austin Alvarez

5/27/2008
From the guys who brought you "Pop/Rock", "My Purpose", and "Beaumont Boy", Eddie Lewis has teamed up once again with Kelly Dean and Ed Lowe for another recording project. This time they were the proverbial "Cherry On Top" for an up-and-coming Houston musician named Austin Alvarez.

All-State Prep
5/27/2008
This workshop was a first of firsts. Attendance was not what we had hoped for, but sometimes it takes a while for a new thing to get going. But we did have enough students there to make it a success. This first workshop focused on everything that should happen up until your first note of the audition. Subsequent workshops will focus more on the music and will have even more intense competitive aspects.

Physical Trumpet Pyramid
3rd Edition

5/23/2008
We are so very pleased to announce the publication of the third edition of Eddie Lewis' first book, The Physical Trumpet Pyramid. There were originally no intentions to include this book in the catalogue, but so many people have asked about it that we decided to invest the effort into getting it up to the quality level of Mr. Lewis' other books. That effort has paid off and we now have a product we can be proud of.

Update:
Listening Room
5/23/2008
We have updated the Listening Room to include some YouTube video clips of famous trumpet players. This is meant for Mr. Lewis' students to listen to and study.

New Products

5/13/2008
Mr. Lewis and his wife have a new bumper sticker, mug and coffee cup for sale on their CafePress site. The image (as shown above) has a poem and graphic representations of a nuclear explosion. Here is the text for the poem:

The Trumpet
One day while we were practicing
A note exploded beyond my bell
Tiny neutrons colliding here
And there a mushroom cloud did swell.

I did not mean to play so loud
And surely no harm did I intend
Towards those poor wooden instruments
Now scorched and charred beyond amend.

Frank Sinatra Jr. and Walt Johnson
5/12/2008
Eddie Lewis was blessed with the opportunity to play second trumpet under Walt Johnson, one of the best lead trumpet players in the world. They performed with Frank Sinatra Jr. at the Alley Theater Gala.

Women In Jazz

4/29/2008
The Houston Civic Jazz Orchestra has just completed the final concert of their 2007-2008 season with their annual "Women In Jazz" concert. This year the featured guests were Carol Morgan (performing works by Eddie Lewis and one of her own compositions), Julie Wilson and Marcia Frasier.

Byram Ranch Gig

4/29/2008
Eddie Lewis did a wedding reception with Richard Brown last weekend on the exotic and luxurious Byram Ranch. This west Texas paradise is one of the most exotic gig locals imaginable - with a private airstrip, imported African game and Alice In Wonderland architecture.

Contracting Bliss
The Temptations and
The Four Tops

4/29/2008
It's always a joy when a good plan comes together. Mr. Lewis was the "horn contractor" for a recent performance of the Temptations and the Four Tops. Everyone involved was happy with the performance and this marks a new high in Mr. Lewis' music career.

Workshop Success!
4/21/2008
Consort Immanuel's first free workshop geared towards Christian musicians was presented on the 18th with a successful response from the workshop attendees. This workshop addressed stage fright and performance anxiety issues from a Christian perspective. The underlying message of the workshop was that God wants to be involved in that part of your life. There's no need for Christians to turn to new-age books for help in that area of their lives.

Santa Barbara, CA
Primo Gig - dude!

4/9/2008
Sometimes it's hard to be a trumpet player. :-) When the band can't find anyplace better to stay than "The Four Seasons - Biltmore", you have to wonder if it's worth it to keep playing anymore.

He he he.... All kidding aside, this was a very plush gig compared to most. Mr. Lewis and the rest of the David Caceres band enjoyed their stay in Santa Barbara.

Newsletter Part II

3/17/2008
The Blue Gnus is a Young Audiences ensemble playing educational shows in the Houston area school. Final Results
3/13/2008
Congratulations are in order for the following students: David Alexander, Will Cook, Elijah Micheaus and Kyle Taylor. All of them received first division ratings on their solos. An honorable mention also goes out to Brandon Haskins who was offered an Easter gig by his pianist. Brandon performed "My Spirit Be Joyful" which comes from Bach's Easter cantata.

Dean Vali
3/10/2008
Ed Lowe and Eddie Lewis were guest performers with this east coast band. In many ways, the group and their repertoire were very much similar to what's done here locally. The main difference was in the overall feel of the music. Things felt a lot more "comfortable" and "in the pocket" with Dean Vali than what Eddie has experienced in Houston.
