Mr. Lewis is a goal oriented teacher who
takes an active role in helping students accomplish their own goals as
trumpet players or jazz musicians.
Experience
Mr. Lewis has been teaching private trumpet lessons
since 1980 and has helped literally hundreds of students achieve their
personal musical goals. Many of his past students are now professional
players or teachers (some teach at the college level).
Having been a Texas All-State
Band member himself (two times in the early 80's), Mr. Lewis knows what it
takes to win auditions and has consistently helped his high school
students to place in those ensembles.
Mr.
Lewis also has experience at helping students change their embouchures.
This is never a first option. He always looks for alternative solutions
but has enough experience to know when no other options exist.
Expertise
Mr. Lewis' expertise as a teacher comes from his many
years as a professional musician. If you read his resume,
you will see that he is one of the most sought after freelance trumpet
players in Houston and the state of Texas.
There
are three basic types of trumpet players. There are classical players,
there are jazz players and there are those who are trained in both
classical and jazz but are commonly referred to as "studio
players". Mr. Lewis fits in this third category and has made a good
living performing and recording in a great variety of different
styles.
Consider how this expertise enhances
his students' experience. Not only does he inspire them with stories of
his work as a professional musician, but the students also get something
of a guarantee that the things he tells them to do and practice really do
accomplish certain goals. He doesn't know those things in theory. He has
put them to practice himself and they have produced results in his own
career.
